“I like how all these different schools came together, played basketball and we learned new leadership skills”
“I improved in basketball and learned how to be a leader and a captain”
“It was an amazing learning experience I enjoyed myself a lot”
Leadership
is vital to the success of our student-athletes-both on & off the
court. Aspire Youth Development in collaboration with the
Athletic Advantage Fund (AAF) has developed the Girls Basketball
Leadership Camp (GBLC) to provide high school girls basketball captains
(entering 10th-12th grade) from different high schools with the
leadership & interpersonal skills necessary to effectively guide
teammates, seize opportunities and reach their personal
potential.
High school student-athletes are highly
visible and influential members of their school communities. Yet while
most student-athletes are formally trained to perform athletically and
academically, few receive any formal leadership training. The GBLC
provides comprehensive leadership training and more importantly
promotes a cultural shift towards character based leadership among
student athletes. The Girls Basketball Leadership Camp consists of 4
fully integrated components:
Dynamic leadership sessions featuring interactive training & field exercises designed for team leadership and personal development.
Basketball skill improvement
through position specific instruction incorporating drills with game
strategy lead by experienced high school & college coaches as well
as college players.
Academic sessions featuring SAT improvement strategies, overall study skills as well as NCAA college recruitment.
Community service learning project with Trenton area youth organizations.
Along
with all the training activities (basketball, leadership, service
learning and academic improvement) students will receive:
Two (2) night dorm accommodations & seven (7) meals
Program materials (t-shirts, manuals, handouts, and awards)
Ongoing leadership development resources
Recreational activities
We
invite schools to select three (3) student-athletes who are captains
(or potential captains) in their programs to develop their leadership
skills through participation in the Girls Basketball Leadership
Camp. These three participants are critical for implementing the
strategies covered during the program. Thanks to the generosity
of the Athletic Advantage Fund, who are sponsoring room & board and
leadership curriculum, student athletes only have to pay $100 for this
premier overnight camp for student athletes across the greater
Philadelphia region.
The Girls Basketball Leadership
Camp is a component of the Athletic Leadership Initiative (ALI) which
prepares high school student-athletes to demonstrate leadership and
promote a cultural shift towards character based leaders among student
athletes to impact their teams, schools and communities. The ALI
consists of five program components:
